Overview
The year 1852 in Beloit saw several institutional developments. The Rock River Bank, the first bank in Beloit, was organized with $50,000 of capital by Pittsburgh gentlemen, and a book store opened under the name Wright, Merrill & Newcombe. A separate post office building was built with Mr. Bastian as postmaster, and a banker advertised from the Stevens house block. Beloit College graduated one student, Professor Porter joined the college, ancient works on its grounds were surveyed by Prof. S., and the annual County Fair was held at Beloit in September. ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗ (+9 more)
Railroad construction and chartering dominated the wider region. The Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad was pushed forward to Milton and opened to Janesville, with Edward H. Broadhead placed in charge as chief engineer and superintendent. Numerous railroad companies were chartered or incorporated during the year: Beloit & Madison (reorganized under a new charter), Beloit & Mississippi, Southern Wisconsin, Milwaukee & Horicon, Racine Janesville & Mississippi, Sheboygan & Mississippi, Mineral Point, and LaCrosse & Milwaukee. ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗ (+9 more)
Rock County and the region saw continued settlement, institutional founding, and political activity. The Wisconsin Institute for the Deaf and Dumb was established by legislative act and organized at Delavan; Racine College and the Milwaukee Female College were founded; and Edward V. Whiton was elected Chief Justice when the supreme court became a separate court.
