The evidence

• “In 1836, he moved to Jones Co., Iowa, and took up a claim on his own account ; from Jones Co., he moved to Beloit, where he went to farming and raising stock ; there, in 1846, went into the butchering business. In 1852, he formed one of a party that went to California, and who traveled together for mutual protection ; he stayed there but three months, then returned to Beloit. In 1854, he engaged in the produce business, buying hogs, cattle, grain, etc., and shipping to market.”
