• “Being a young man of no little ability and enterprise, he soon entered, business for himself and obtained the construction of the old Galena railroad, now part of the North-Western system. For twenty years he followed this business with profitable returns and in 1852 he removed to Beloit, where he purchased a farm of 444 acres in the same township. His interest in the development of farming lands in southern Wisconsin has been marked.”
