• “His early purpose was to learn the cabinet maker's trade, but he abandoned this and became a machinist and was employed by the Middlesex Manufacturing Company at Lowell, Mass. He was a skillful mechanic, and although his services were always in demand, he saw greater opportunities in the West, and in 1852 removed with his family to Eock county, Wisconsin, and settled on a new farm in the township of Janesville and there established the family home. Later in life he retired from the farm and took up his residence in Janesville.”
