Overview
In Beloit itself, the documented activity was limited: the father of Captain John P. Houston built a bridge and made that his business. Elsewhere in the region, two treaties were concluded at Prairie du Chien — one on July 29 with the Chippewas, Ottawas and Pottawattamies, and another on August 1 with the Winnebagoes. The General Government also purchased a tract from Lockwood and James D. Doty covering farm lots thirty-three and thirty-four of the private land claims at Prairie du Chien, about one hundred and sixty acres, and Fort Crawford was built there, with construction spanning 1829, 1830 and 1831. ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗
The wider region saw developments tied to the lead industry and settlement infrastructure: lead production in the Wisconsin lead region stood at 5,000 tons, a map of the United States lead mines on the Upper Mississippi River was published at Galena, Ill., the Fort Howard military reservation was set apart by order of the President, and John P.
