Overview
Benj. F. arrived in Wisconsin in May and settled on 160 acres, building a log cabin shared with five other men through the season. Farmer's map of the Territories of Michigan and Ouisconsin was published this year, naming the river draining the four lakes the Goosh-ke-hawn, noting Lake Koshkonong, and marking a Winnebago village at the mouth of that river. The rush of miners to the lead region of southwestern Wisconsin, under way since 1826, continued through 1830, and Fort Crawford at Prairie du Chien was built over 1829, 1830 and 1831. ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗
Events attributed to 1830 in Rock County include E. Allen's arrival and the removal of Meader and Lydia (Stevens) Perrigo to New York; the Perrigos later located in Fulton township in 1866. In the wider region, the Sacs and Foxes ceded a twenty-mile-wide strip of land on the north side of their territory from the Mississippi to the Des Moines. A party of Menomonees and Sioux murdered some of the British band of Sacs this year, and in 1831 Black Hawk's war party retaliated by killing twenty-seven Menomonees near Fort Crawford. ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗
Congress approved an act concerning pre-emption of public lands on May 29. A report recorded 154 cases of fever in the third quarter of 1830, compared with one case in the same quarter of 1836. The white population of settlements at the mouth of the Milwaukee river and at Chicago is said to have numbered about 155,000.
