Overview
In Beloit, 1858 saw changes in churches, schools, and businesses. Rev. C. Smedes resigned from the Episcopal parish in July; Rev. Oliver Bronson was chosen pastor of a Beloit church in October and installed October 24; Rev. Marvin/Harvin Humphrey died in October at the age of ninety; and the Westminster Presbyterian Church was formed on the west side of Beloit. Prof. W. C. Whitford took charge of the school in the fall and became permanently connected as principal, a resolution on graded schools was drawn on October 20, and Beloit College erected a chapel to which citizens contributed $3,000. John M. Cobb came to Beloit in May and joined the Rock River Paper Co., Hiram Bowen's name as co-editor disappeared from a newspaper after the November 10 issue, and a farmer returned from Minnesota to Beloit in the fall. ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗ (+6 more)
Across Rock County, a county judge's term began January 1, Judge Keep tendered his resignation in July, and David Noggle of Janesville was appointed circuit judge on July 27. Janesville elected city officers in April with William A. Lawrence as mayor; the county election was held November 2; a State Senator for the Southern District was elected in the fall, as was a Porter Township farmer to the State Legislature. Two Janesville banks reported $150,000 combined capital on July 5, the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company began business at Janesville, and the Janesville High School building was erected. Edgerton gained a physician, a watch repairer, an attorney, a jeweler, and a merchant during the year, and the Rock County Agricultural Society held its annual fair on September 28. ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗ (+10 more)
Railroads advanced in the region: the line west from Janesville was finished to Monroe in January, the C. & N.-W. track reached West Milton where the first house was built, and other Wisconsin roads reached Fond du Lac, Plymouth, La Crosse, and Columbus. The revised laws of Wisconsin were published as the Revised Statutes of 1858, banking-law amendments were adopted by the legislature and approved by the people at the fall election, and the La Crosse & Milwaukee and Milwaukee & Horicon companies defaulted on interest with foreclosure proceedings following. ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗ (+6 more)
