In 1898 the chronology records few events at the mouth of Turtle Creek itself, but the surrounding area of Beloit saw considerable activity. The mill of the Blodgett Milling Company was almost totally destroyed by fire in July. A new railway depot replaced the old wooden structure on Academy street, the Chicago & North-Western Railway Company building it. Beloit College raised one hundred and fifty thousand dollars in endowments, one-third of it given by Dr. D. K. Pearsons. Company E, First Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, assembled at Beloit in October and was discharged from United States service. Father Eoche (Roche) severed his connection with the parish in September, and Rev. Fayett Royce, in charge of a church for twenty-nine years, died during the year and was succeeded. Several businesses changed hands: Augustine J. Gaston sold his interest in his firm, forming the partnership N. Gaston & Son; Palmer & Stevens, druggists, sold out to George E. King & Co.; a fountain pen and ink manufacturer bought the McKeys building; a pharmacist opened a drug store on East Grand avenue; and a member of Thoroughgood & Co. retired. A weekly farm paper, "The Farm and Home," began publication July 1. "The Phoenix," a monthly high school publication, was revived, and a student graduated as Salutatorian in the Beloit College class of 1898. Private Yost of the Beloit company killed a four-foot rattlesnake while in camp, and a man served as alderman of the Second ward during 1897-1899. ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗ ↗ (+12 more)
