Overview
For the land at the mouth of Turtle Creek, the documented 1834 event is the notation of Thiebault's cabin at the Turtle village in the plat of the Government survey of the township. Rock County events include the survey of the residue of the county in the first quarter of 1834 and the Government Surveyors' notation of eight mounds on the west shore of Lake Koshkonong. Regionally, surveyors described the Winnebago village site of Tay-e-hee-dah as the 'ruins of an old Indian village,' and a census was taken in the portion of Michigan Territory east of Lake Michigan. A mill was built on the Wisconsin side of the Menomonee, from which lumber was first shipped to market from the bay shore district. The Michigan territorial legislative council acted on September 6, creating Milwaukee county out of the southern portion of Brown county and dividing the Iowa district into the counties of Des Moines and Dubuque. In June, Congress approved an act creating additional land districts, establishing the Wisconsin and Green Bay land districts in the Territory of Michigan, and on June 28 attached the country west of the Mississippi river and north of the State of Missouri to Michigan Territory for temporary judicial purposes. Congress also greatly increased the limits of the Territory of Michigan for judicial purposes by adding a large extent of country west of the Mississippi.
