In Beloit itself, 1901 saw the establishment of a public library, with its building commenced that year along with a city hall, following word in March that Andrew Carnegie would give the city $30,000 for a library provided the city furnish the site. A new church's corner stone was laid on May 30, after the decision to sell the prior church property in April and its sale on April 26. Vermeulen moved to Beloit and entered the real estate and loan business, Mattison's wood turning machinery business moved to Fifth street and Portland avenue, the business successor to Gaston & Sons was incorporated as the N. B. (name truncated), and H. C. Buell became superintendent succeeding D. Mayne. At the July annual meeting of the college's board of trustees, Whitford urged the immediate beginning of a fund for the erection of Science Hall, and elsewhere in the region the college's property valuation was reported with no indebtedness and a dormitory was erected by Mrs. M.
