“James R. Doolittle, republican, was the successful candidate for that office, for a full term of six years, from the fourth of March, 1857. The legislature ■adjourned on the ninth of March, 1857. At the Spring election, Judge Whiton was re-elected •chief justice of the supreme court for a term of six years.”
