Milwaukee Journal, Sunday, October 15, 1922: Oldest Mounds at Beloit, Belief 210 Indian Effigies Mostly Contain Human Remains SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT OF THE JOURNAL BELOIT — Unique Indian mound groups in and around Beloit will be advertised as a motor tourist attraction if the suggestion of Prof. George L. Collie, head of the Beloit college geology and archeology departments, is carried out. No other city in the state except Madison can boast such a numerous grouping of Indian mounds within city limits and in immediate vicinity, declares Dr. Collie, who has specialized in the study of these remains of aboriginal civilization and through the work of whose students many mounds have been discovered. A thorough charting shows 210 Indian mounds to have existed in and close to Beloit, though many of these within the city have been destroyed with the advance of building operations. Of the 210 mounds, 27 were of the effigy or animal variety, made in the shape of turtles, panthers, birds and lizards.
