In the year 1903 a state law was passed which requires all children between the ages of seven and fourteen, and all those between fourteen and sixteen, who are not lawfully employed at home or elsewhere, to attend school at least twenty-four weeks of each year, if living in the country, and thirty-two weeks, if in the city. For the year 1905 the average attendance of pupils in the first district was reported as being 115 days per pupil.
