Smith as a residence on Washington street near the bank of Rock river. The need for a public hospital where charity cases might be treated was so great that a committee of the Twilight Club raised a fund towards the purchase of the Palmer Hospital, and the Catholic Sisters of Mercy bought the property from the Palmer association with the aid of the fund thus raised and began its operation as a public hospital on April 1, 1907.
