The evidence

• “His father was an only son, and his mother an only daughter, consequently his cousins, aunts and uncles were necessarily limited. In 1825 the family emigrated from Ireland to America. After spending two years in New York they removed to Detroit, where Thomas learned the printer's trade and was one to set type on the first issue of the "Detroit Free Press."”
