A cheese factory was established by James Clough in Fulton Township, the first in Rock County; in that year it turned out 38,000 pounds of butter.

• “James Clough, which has not only the honor of being the first if not the only one in Fulton Township, but has the additional honor of being the first in Rock County. It was established in 1857 by the present proprietor, who, in that year, turned out 38,000 pounds of butter, and, last year, made no less than 50,000 pounds and a similar number of pounds of cheese. The material necessary for the manufacture of such large quantities of butter and cheese is obtained from the farmers within a radius of from six to eight miles, and gives constant employment to six teamsters drawing it in.”
