• “Soon after that date he began loaning money, the usual rate of interest then being three per cent a month. After several years' absence he again conducted a banking business here during the years 1854 to 1857, and weathered the financial storm of that last disastrous year, but then went into voluntary liquidation. His residence and office at that time was a frame building south of Race street on the west side of South State street, the premises, No. 144, now occupied by the Columbia block.”
