• “The father was a man of delicate physical frame, but of strong intellect and high moral and religious principles. He was for Free Soil, and was elected to the legislature in 1848 when there were only thirteen Free Soilers in that body. But his influence helped secure the Institution for the Blind for Janesville, and he was one of its trustees from 1852 to 1858.”
