Nelson Coon sold the Exchange hotel and built the United States Hotel

The evidence

• “Swift erected the ''Swift Block." In the winter of 1853-54, Nelson Coon erected the first hotel building and conducted it as the Exchange hotel. He sold this in 1854 and built the United States Hotel. From this time forward the village continued to grow and the number of buildings increased in size and grandeur, until now there are many large and well stocked stores, a modern hotel and large modern and up-to-date residences, quite different from those of pioneer days.”
