• “They first located themselves on the rich bottomlands which extend along the south bank of the St. Peter's, but not finding it a healthy situation, removed in the spring of 1820, to an eminence on the west bank of the Mississippi, a mile distant from the old cantonement—a situation which is extremely pleasant and salubrious, and where they will remain until the permanent works are completed upon the bluff at the junction of the two rivers.”
