The evidence

• “In 1852, he formed one of a party that went to California, and who traveled together for mutual protection ; he stayed there but three months, then returned to Beloit. In 1854, he engaged in the produce business, buying hogs, cattle, grain, etc., and shipping to market. In the fall of 1857, he bought out one-half interest in the milling business from Mr.”
