• “St. John to put me up a cabin, and on the 19th of May, 1836, about 4 o'clock in the afternoon, 1 threaded my way to my cabin along an Indian trail that passed up the river, through the present city of Janesville..My family now made about the fourth family in the county. It may, and doubtless will, appear rather strange to some of the citizens of.Janesville that, nineteen years and a half ago, the whole city consisted of one family, and one log cabin eighteen feet square, with the bark on the logs, and no floor in it or shutter to the door-way.”
