Janesville entertained a visitor who in after years became General and then President of the United States, during a conflict of railroad interests.

• “In the summer of 1853, Janesville had the distinguished honor of entertaining an individual who, in after years, became a great General, then President of the United States, and at this writing is receiving the homage of his country, after having visited many parts of Asia and the great capitals of Europe, and been received with all the pomp and pageantry ever accorded a king. It was during a time of conflict between certain railroad interests centering in Janesville.”
