The people of Jefferson County built the Court House at Jefferson and held a celebration with an oration by George Markly (the writer states "I think it was" 1845).

• “After that I frequently visited my friends at Aztalan crossing the river on this bridge. I remember when the people of Jefferson County, in 1845 I think it was, built the Court House at Jefferson. I think it was on the 4th of July and they had a celebration, George Markly, a lawyer residing there delivered the oration.”
