Surveyor Willard Barrows wrote to the Davenport "Gazette" about Black Hawk's death and burial.

The evidence

• “Strong, near what is now Montrose, Lee county. Surveyor Willard Barrows, however, wrote to the Davenport "Gazette" in 1859 that Black Hawk sickened and died near lowaville, on the Des Moines river in Wapello county, and was buried near by; that at a later period his bones were placed in the hall of the Historical Society at Burlington, Iowa, and consumed when the whole collection was destroyed by fire. Barrows said that he noted Black Hawk's wigwam and grave while surveying in 1843.”
