The Hayes brothers were large railroad contractors for many years, building a great portion of the railroad between Janesville and Evansville, and they had also large contracts on the Chicago drainage canal. They showed their faith in Janesville by investing their money at home, they having bought the Armory block on "West Milwaukee street from the Myers estate in 1893, and then later followed it by the investment of about $100,000 in the office building spoken of above.
