This started the coming of white miners from the south, who gradually drifted into the lead region and, in 1822, were working the mines under the protection of United States troops. The AVinnebagoes claimed possession over other Indians and so, in 1825, a treaty of peace was made at Prairie du Chien to settle the boundaries between Winnebagoes, Sacs, Foxes, Chippewas, lowas, Ottawas and Pottawattomics.”
