The first school in Footville was opened by Julius Gilbert in Mr. Foot's old log building.

• “The early educational facilities of Footville were not, as may be supposed, the best in the world ; but, incomplete as they were, they laid the foundation of some very brilliant men. The first one was opened in the winter of 1848, by Julius Gilbert, in the old log building owned by Mr. Foot.”
