Caswell was born in the town of Swanton, Franklin County, Vermont.

The evidence

• “I was born in the town of Swanton, Franklin County, Vermont on the 27th day of November 1827, three-fourths of a mile west of Green Corners and, four miles East of St. Albans and there lived nearly nine years of my life upon a small farm and attended the common schools as most of the neighbors did and strove hard with that poor rocky soil to keep body and soul together, and I have always rejoiced that the western fever caught my people at a very early date although we endured many hardships because of the wild condition of the country in which we settled.”
