• “Early in May. 1840, three young men, Lars Halvorsen Skavlem (7), his brother Gjermund (8) and Knud Christbinusen (9) arrived at Widow Gunnel's. They were of the "Amelia" party, but had spent the winter near Chicago, where they had work, earning a little more than their board.”
