• “In 1841 he, then in his nineteenth year, emigrated with his father and family to Wisconsin, and settled in what is now the town of Lyons, Walworth county, where he resided until 1850. With the exception of two terms of school teaching, he worked on a farm until the spring of 1844, when he entered the office of the late Judge George Gale, then a practicing lawyer at Elkhorn, as a student ; but before this, he had read Blackstone 's commentaries as well as those of Kent quite thoroughly. He remained a few months with his preceptor when he returned home to work through harvest.”
