• “Dr. Samuel Bruce Buckmaster, writer of the above article, was born at Lima, Ohio, April 26, 1853. When eighteen years old he went to California and taught school three years at Yreka, near the lava beds, where the Modoc war occurred and the peace commissioners, including Major General Canby, were murdered by Captain Jack and his bloodthirsty Modocs.”
