“JOHN W. WEST, Superintendent of Schools, EvansviUe ; born in EvansviUe, Rock Co., Wis., Jan. 31, 1844; son of Squire Jacob West, one of Rock Co.'s earliest settlers, who settled in Union Township in the faU of 1840 ; John W., in 1862, at the age of 18 years, engaged in teaching school, in Exeter Township, Green Co., at what was known as the Ross School, remaining there until May, 1863, when he enlisted in the 40th W.”
