The evidence

• “A paragraph at the head of the editorial columns of the first issue of the Journal and Courier, April 5, 1860, announces the consolidation, without explanation or comment. In their issue of October 31, 1861, Messrs. Perkins & Co. inform their readers that, owing to the " falling off in their foreign advertisements," the paper was reduced in size from eight to seven columns. Just one week later, viz., on November 7, 1861, the valedictory of N. 0. Perkins appears, announcing the transfer of the Journal and Courier to Barrett H. and Lathrop B.”
