The Janesville weekly newspaper's old name (the Gazette) was restored and its form changed.

The evidence

• “Sackett, the proprietor, the same merged into The Gazette, and thereupon,. on the 9th day of March, 1857, the Janesville Morning Gazette, quiescent since 1854, was restored to life, with Charles Holt and Hiram Bowen as editors, and an encouraging list of subscribers as sponsors for its future welfare and prosperity'. The weekly was enlarged and thereafter known to readers and cotemporaries as The Weekly Gazette and Free Press, until January 15, 1864, when the old name was restored, the form of the paper changed from folio to quarto, and numerous other improvements perfected under the direction of the then proprietors, A. M.”
