Leonard Hemenway and Harriet (Wood) Wheeler were sent out as missionaries among the Chippewa Indians.

• “His paternal ancestors settled in and about Bridport, Vt., at an early day and those on his mother's side in and around Lowell, Mass. His parents, Leonard Hemenway and Harriet (Wood) Wheeler, were sent out as missionaries and lived and labored among the Chippewa Indians from 1841 until 1866, when they removed to Beloit with their family in order to give their children the benefit of its educational advantages. After finishing his preliminary studies our subject entered Beloit College and was there graduated with the degree of bachelor of arts with the class of 1878, after which he taught school two terms.”
