Inman and Holmes, carrying their goods, reached the location of Janesville and encamped that night on the bluff on the east side of the river.

The evidence

• “During the night their ponies escaped and wandered on down the river. The next morning, July 18, 1835, they took their stuff on their backs and tramped on down the river, reaching the location of Janesville that afternoon. They must have forded the river somewhere, for they encamped that night on the bluff at the southern edge of the river on the east side of the river, from where they could see the remains of Black Hawk's camp.”
