The evidence

• “In 1842 (date of first census), there were 75 school children in Janesville; "in 1845, 273; 1850, 1,000 ; 1853 (date of first charter), 1,600 ; 1856, 2,560. Of this last number, 858, or 33| per cent, are reported as enrolled in the public schools, while the census of 1877 shows a school”
