• “A son, Horatio C. Burchard (1826-1908), studied and taught in Beloit, graduated at Hamilton college, New York, in 1850, became a lawyer, a member of the Illinois legislature, 1862 to 1865, and United States congressman from 1869 to 1879. He was then appointed director of the United States mint, an offiee to which his distinguished services in the interest of a safer currency gave a new degree of honor.”
