The east half of Township 3 north, Range 13 east, was organized into a separate town, reducing the town of Janesville to six square miles.

The evidence

• “The organization of these two towns of course greatly reduced the size of the town of Janesville ; but, on the 10th of April of the last mentioned year, all that part of Township 3 north, of Range J.2 east, was annexed to it, so that it then contained the two originally surveyed Townships 3 north, of Ranges 12 and 13 east. Afterward, in 1850, the east half (which was Township 3 north, of Range 13 east) was organized into a separate town ; and thus the town of Janesville was made to include territory six miles square — Township 3 north, of Range 12 east. This is still its size, after deducting therefrom so much of the city of Janesville as lies therein.”
