Mr. Janes surveyed and platted the land east of the river contiguous to the ferry (the village of Janesville); he also made out a plat of his homesteaded land.

• “At this period commences the history of our place as a town or village.— The land on the east side of the river contiguous to the ferry, was first surveyed and platted in the spring of 1837, by Mr. Janes, and subsequently replatted by the county commissioners in May 1840, about eight months a ter the land was brought into market by general Government.”
