The Caswell party reached Milwaukee, crossing the river on the ice.

The evidence

• “We reached Milwaukee and crossed over the mouth of the river on the ice. In the evening at about eight o'clock, March 24th, 1837, we found over on the East side a small board hotel, the only one I think in the village. As near as I could estimate there were five or six hundred people in the village.”
