August, 1869, as an experiment only, the Janesville Democrat having retired from the field, and chatiged its base of operations to Dodge County, about two months previous. Locally, and as the disseminator of general news, the Times was in no respect inferior to either of its competitors ; politically, it was Democratic of the most pronounced and unmistakable character. The success of what was, in the first instance, issued as a carnpaign paper, must have been conceded, for in September, 1869, or within two months from the date of its first publication, it was found necessary to increase its size and effect other improvements, to compete advantageously with rivals during the exciting campaign of that year, when, as will be remembered, the Times represented the interests and claims of Charles D. Robinson, of Green Bay, the Democr^,tic candidate for Governor, in opposition to Lucius Fairchild, the Republican nominee for re-election.
