• “After marriage, Mr. Pratt worked a farm on shares awhile ; then went into the store business, and, ia the fall of 1846, came to Clinton; remained that winter, and then went to La Fayette Co., Wis.; in the spring of 1848, took family of two children and effects in ox team ; was six days going seventy-five miles ; the roads were on a terrible condition. The last day of his journey had to cross Pecatonica River ; it was very high, and not being acquainted with the ford, they stuck fast in the middle of the stream, and he had to take his wife and family across on his back ; while up to his neck in water, he suggested to his better half that they had better give up and go back ; she replied, with spirit, " Never !”
