• “Pease was the only person available and experienced in such work or who would undertake it. In 1846, at the beginning of the Mexican war, he was tendered a clerkship by an early friend in the navy office at "Washington, which offer he accepted, and remained in that position until the close of the war. He then returned to Janesville and was soon after admitted to the bar.”
