• “In August, 1839, Mr. Janes removed from Janesville westward, as there were getting to be too many settlers here, and he found that the county could take his preemption, Janes was a typical frontiersman, and his name is perpetuated in Janesville, Minn., and JanesviUe, Iowa, as well as in Wisconsin, and perhaps in places farther west.”
