The Sugar River Valley Railroad Company was chartered by the legislature.

The evidence

• “The legislature of 1855 chartered the " Sugar River Valley Railroad Company '' to build a road from a point on the north side of the line of the Southern Wisconsin road, within the limits of Green county, to Dayton, on the Sugar river. In 1857 it was authorized to build south to the state line, and make its northern terminus at Madison.”
