July 6, 1857, three banks reported in the aggregate $200,000 capital, $422,000 "due to depositors on demand and others," and $425,000 of loans. July 5, 1858, there were two incorporated banks left, having a combined capital of $150,000, and reporting $115,000 due to depositors and to others, and $185,000 in loans. Such a shrinkage of deposits could only have been endured by banks doing business largely on their own cash capital.
