This bank opened for business in October, 1875, in Lappin's block, in the office formerly occupied by the Wisconsin Savings bank. Their first report under date of December 7, 1875, shows capital paid in $20,000; deposits, $47,000; loans, $37,000. The "Merchant's & Mechanic's" was the first bank in Janesville to attempt a combined commercial and savings bank business.
