1840
After the land sale, the present cemetery ground [in Janesville] was laid out; the 1908 history says the cemetery was located in the block where the Third Ward school later stood.
The evidence
“The plat was given for cemetery purposes, and the remains of two or three persons were interred there. After the land sale, viz., in 1840, the present ground was laid out, the control of it being in the hands of the town. Subsequently, it passed into the hands of the village authorities ; and, when the city was organized, into the possession of the " City Fathers," who still retain it.”
